Movers scam is costing people thousands of dollars in Fresno
by Kimberly Kolliner
Wednesday, March 17th 2021 FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — More and more people are moving out of California, either because it's too expensive, or they want to be closer to loved ones.
Whatever the reason, scammers are now taking advantage of those wanting to move.
Courtesy Moving & Storage is warning people to vet the movers they hire because dozens have already been scammed out of thousands.
You try to call them back in a day or two. All of a sudden the phone is disconnected, there’s no such animal,” said Powell.
Powell says if some price you find online sounds too good to be true, trust your instincts.
“They are quoting half of what a regular rate should be until they get your things on the truck and then it's going to be double," explained Powell.
The first red flag in a moving scam is if the mover offers you a much lower rate than other quotes you've seen.
"The rates are all the same with all your reputable companies. They are set by the government, but having said that, it has opened the doors for some big-time con artists. They are quoting half of what a regular rate should be until they get your things on the truck and then it's going to be double."
The next red flag is if the mover asks for a deposit upfront.
